Where AEO sits in a wider revenue stack

AEO is the Intercept layer of the post-search era. We measure that layer. We do not build the rest.

Most operators we talk to are running some version of the same revenue funnel: generate demand, intercept it where it forms, capture it cleanly, convert it into closed pipeline. Generate, Intercept, Capture, Convert. Whatever you call the stages, the shape is consistent — and most of the energy in any given quarter goes into whichever layer is most visibly leaking.

It is a useful frame for thinking about pipeline. It is not, by itself, a product. It is a way to ask: where is the line breaking, and what is the cheapest place to fix it.

We want to be precise about where Stand Scope fits in that frame, because the temptation in this market is to claim the whole funnel and end up being good at none of it.

The Intercept layer is changing

Intercept is the layer where buyers find you in the act of looking. For two decades that meant search — Google, ranking, SEO. The discipline was understood: produce content, win SERPs, measure clicks. Imperfect, but defensible. Operators knew what to spend on, and roughly what to expect back.

That layer is splitting. A growing share of buyer research now happens inside an AI answer — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, the long tail of frontier models embedded into the tools your buyers already use. The buyer types a question, the model returns a synthesis, the sources are cited or not, and a decision starts to form. The buyer never lands on a page you control. They form a view from an answer you did not see and cannot easily measure.

This is Answer Engine Optimization. It is not a rebrand of SEO. It is the Intercept layer adapted to a substrate where the answer, not the link, is the surface.

What changes when the surface is an answer

Three things break, all at once.

Visibility is no longer click-derived. You cannot count clicks on an answer your buyer read inside ChatGPT. The signal has to be: did the model name us, with what framing, against which competitors, citing which sources. That is a measurement problem, not an analytics problem.

Authority is entity-shaped, not page-shaped. Models do not rank pages; they synthesise from sources. Whether your brand shows up in a synthesis depends on entity records (Wikidata, Wikipedia), structured data, llms.txt policies, citation graph depth, and the technical surface that retrievers can actually parse. The work is closer to schema and identity than it is to content.

Engines disagree. Recognition on ChatGPT does not predict recognition on Perplexity. Citation behaviour on Gemini is different to Claude’s. Single-engine measurement is anecdote. Multi-engine measurement is evidence.

Where we sit

Stand Scope is a measurement platform for the Intercept layer in the AI-answer era. We probe every frontier model with the prompts your buyers actually run. We capture the raw answers, the cited sources, and the technical and entity signals that determine whether the engine names you. We score the result on a documented rubric, version the artifact, and surface the fixes that move the number.

We do not build the rest of the stack. We do not run outbound, build CRMs, write content calendars, or implement attribution. There are good operators in each of those layers, and we are not them. AEO is enough surface area to do well; we have no interest in being mediocre across four disciplines instead.

The choice is deliberate. The moat in measurement is reproducibility — the same prompt, the same model, the same week, the same captured answer. You cannot build that moat while you are also running someone’s outbound. Measurement businesses and execution businesses pull in opposite directions; the first depends on neutrality, the second on opinion.

The honest version

If you are looking for a vendor to install your full revenue stack, we are not it. We will name better operators on request.

If you want the Intercept layer measured properly — every frontier model, evidence captured, scores re-derivable from artifact, fixes prioritised by expected impact — that is what the platform does, and that is the only thing we will claim to be good at.

The rest of the funnel is your problem, or someone else’s. We measure the layer where AI describes you. That is the work.
